We got our freshmen today! They are awesome and an excellent addition to the community, etc, etc, and I am glad we got them. Also, along with froshlings, we apparently get an exchange student from Cambridge. He is cute and has a British accent. I'm not sure if this is a :DDDDDD or a DDDDD: moment.

Have a good weekend, everybody. I may not be around much because I will be laughing at people trying to move on the 1st helping my brother move into his dorm. Also, hanging out with my parents, who have decided that tens of thousands of Republicans descending on their hometown is a sign that they should take a vacation. I don't blame them. (It's not even the Republican thing, it's that Minneapolis traffic is not prepared for that many extra people, especially when motorcades get involved.)

ETA: I was looking at the convention's website to see how many people would be attending, and they list the planned speakers. Of course, they're including a few prominent local Republicans, and, really, RNC, Coleman and Bachmann? They are not exactly the rational, integrity-ful image you are looking for. (Pawlenty, on the other hand, is a more reasonable choice.)

So I had dinner with and then hung out with my parents, during which I got an update on my various relatives, especially my cousins. (On my mom's side, there are 13 of us. I am number 10, for the record.) The thing about cousin number 9 who is 21 and marrying an 18 year old next summer is a different post, but one of the things is how cousin number 12 (age 12 or 13, I think) is reading and enjoying the Twilight books. My mother described them as 'chaste romances' (I'm not sure if that was my cousin's phrase or my aunt's*); I quickly disillusioned her, making sure to mention That Scene in the fourth book. (As well as 'Edward is a creepy controlling stalker', 'Bella is a moron', 'No one notices that this is a deeply unhealthy relationship', 'They sparkle', and 'Twilight fans are some of the scariest out there'.)

I think that linking my mother to [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's recaps might be over-the-top, but on the other hand, preventing unsuspecting preteens from reading Breaking Dawn might be a net good. If I do, it'll probably be along with 'Here are some other books you might want to recommend to your sister for my cousin to read!' only first I have to come up with such a list. The collected works of Diana Wynne Jones? Narnia? Megan Whalen Turner? The Robin McKinley books that don't have porny bits? (I'm bad at book recs for this kind of thing because I don't notice the sexxors or the gay in books. Also, I think at that age I was working through my dad's collection of Tom Clancy novels.)

*Most of my extended family is more conservative than my immediate family, for whom 'The Olympic Village: Just How Much Sex Are They Having?' is appropriate dinnertime conversation (my mom brought up the Olympic Village, I brought up the sex).

In other news, my brother has a gigantic dorm room that looks over the river and the Cambridge skyline and I am deeply jealous.
