so, here's the thing about star trek: i enjoy the characters in this version a lot, and so if you give me good character moments and shots of space and madcap running about, i'm going to be happy, even if your plot tends toward the totally nonsensical
+basically after that scene with spock and kirk and pike at the beginning, i had decided that the movie was worth my 7$. a++ work, folks. "i am displaying many attitudes, sir. to which are you referring?" and "i trust you've learned the appropriate lesson." "never trust a vulcan."
-i actually would be interested in a movie about the tension between regulations and the right thing, or about illegal orders. this was not the movie, even if jj maybe thought it was.
+kirk: so pretty, so bruised. jj abrams: giving the people what they want.
+loved the scene where spock and uhura try to get kirk to mediate their relationship problems.
+loved scottie at all times he was present.
+loved sulu being a badass
+/-loved uhura speaking klingon, disappointed that the politicking there didn't go on longer
-the character beat i actually think DIDN'T work was the big Wrath of Khan scene - there's no the emotional build-up to make it meaningful, and it felt like JJ was checking boxes on his WoK list.
+say what you will about bundleboot cumberbund (obnoxious personal opinions, off-putting fans, tendency to get involved in projects with dodgy politics), but i think he is very good at what he does. and while it was obviously wildly poorly-done to cast him as khan specifically, if you are casting a genetically engineered super solider with a cold disdain for humanity at large, he is an excellent choice.
+do you think the costume designer saw sherlock, maybe? was there a scene other than the brig where he WASN'T in a long coat? even when he grabbed a random coat as a disguise, it was ankle-length. i lol'd.
-another movie i would have watched that this wasn't was that moment where kirk is just deciding to trust khan and not marcus, and marcus tells him that khan is a liar, and for a moment it looks like there's going to be head games, right before kirk goes with khan and takes the movie with him.
-or the movie about the contrast between khan and marcus, with khan's ends-justify-the-means and marcus's means-justify-the-end
+mccoy is grumpy about everything and it is perfect
+so if JJ insists on just re-making the original movies, since we clearly don't need Search for Spock, does this mean we get Voyage Home next? because that movie is perfection and i will not let you tell me otherwise.
