Okay, here are some things I said on Twitter just now:

"i don't want to write outlander fic, but there's only so many times one can yell in email about how they need to make out. hmm." "i think maybe what i want is longform, free association, spoiler friendly episode-by-episode discussions?"

So this is an experiment in building it and seeing if they will come [back]! Let's say, hmm, anything aired, anything in preview on starz.com, any episode titles, and anything in books 1-3 is fair game.

some initial thoughts, likely to be added to in-between fighting a Raven Boys shipwar elsewhere:

1. How misleading do we think the preview for 1x04 is? (My guess is: very.)

2. If this season has 16 episodes, aired in a split season, what's the cliffhanger for the end of episode 8? (I had guessed when Claire has the option of returning, but I can't seem to make it work out with the amount of plot that would need to happen.)

3. WILL THE AMOUNT OF UST MAKE ME EXPLODE

4. do you have any tips for telling the scottish dudes apart. help.

5. I feel like Geilis is more prominent in the show so far than the books at this point, and also that they've been more heavy-handed with her dropping anvils on Claire (which I think is a reasonable approach). I'm curious if they'll handle the reveal differently, since I for one could not ID a smallpox vaccination scar without clear labeling. (oh god, maybe it'll be id'd in voiceover. gosh i'm sick of that voiceover.)

*butts in* I'M SORRY BUT ARE YOU ME? Ahem because yes, I also want these things especially if it involves him flashing back to her undoing his neckcloth and how he had to stand so so still to keep from giving anything away.

for the first time in his life, baths can't be cold enough! (but ughhhhh, what if he thinks sometimes about how she just lost her husband and how Claire's husband must have been a good man, a loving one, someone that let Claire be herself always because look at how she is with everyone, look at how she stands up to Dougal and bosses Jamie around. No wonder she misses him so much. No wonder she's crying.)

what if he still jerks it after that scene where he has to break it to her that she's too valuable to let go, and he realizes all over again how unhappy she is and he feels AWFUL but he still wants her so damn bad and maybe has a fantasy or two about taking her to Lallybroch (and having sex with her in the fields outside his home)

it's one of the things I like about the book the most--that Jamie's never a needy or jealous dick about Frank even when he thinks Frank is dead--he clearly gets that Claire's first marriage was a good one, and respects her feelings for Frank throughout. And with this show version of Jamie, who is shown (so far) as being even more respectful to women, I have a feeling that he'd immediately and instinctively GET that Claire's husband had HAD to have been a decent guy for Claire to be this sad over his loss, and for Claire to be this unafraid of going toe to toe with any dude that pisses her off.

Jamie really is The Perfect Dude, and the show is doubling down on that so far as I can tell. (But I like your idea too!) Mostly I just love the idea of Jamie spending that whole third episode thinking that maybe Claire's settling in, finding a place here and then NOPE, she still wants out SO BAD.

GODDAMN THIS ADDICTIVE SHOW *fumes*

anyway, I still haven't read past the first book (but I'm becoming more and more resigned to the idea that I will be reading them shortly FML) but I have seen the episode titles and I am DYING waiting for episode seven, and like you, am super curious about wtf they're going to have as the midseason cliffhanger, if not the wedding itself? There's also a part of me that wonders if they're REALLY going to so closely follow the books as the seasons go on. (A super crack-y part of me wants the midseason cliffhanger to be about Frank coming back into the past and Claire dealing with two husbands at the same time, bc I'm the worst.)

As for the Scottish dudes, I'm going by differences in facial hair? like, I think Murtagh is the one with the super full beard and the obnoxious ones (who I cannot tell apart for love nor money) have less facial hair? Maybe? ffs, Outlander casting department, y'all couldn't get ONE blond dude up in this? Not one?

Finally, the UST. Goddamn, this UST. I can't. Pining is my fucking kryptonite and this show is doing it SO SO WELL from Jamie's end. He just wants to hang out all the time and tell her stuff and maybe have her touch him but shh don't tell.

I DO remember when the witchburning happens and man, there is just not enough time unless they SERIOUSLY rearrange a ton of shit. The Geillis setup could maybe work in time, but they need more of Jamie and Claire legit being married for it to have the same oomph when he busts in and is all, "If you were a witch, I'd have gone to the goddamn stake WITH you."

...I'm totally going to read the second book. this is gonna happen. fml.

I'm gonna end up writing the fic too, I can already tell. (That and probably a post-wedding fic about Claire riding Jamie, how the fuck did we never see them do it in that position in the first book? ALL THOSE SEX SCENES AND WE NEVER GOT THAT?)

the more i think about it, the more I think that might be where it's headed? like, they ARE pushing the witch thing pretty hard, and if the eighth episode is all about them back at Leoch and then it ends with Claire being taken...maybe? But there would be SO MUCH PLOT for them to hit after that still? IDEK, MAN

DUDE YOU TOO? ngl, I keep rereading those sex scenes thinking that this time, I'll work out what position they're in or whatever and NOPE. it's super aggravating. (especially because the early sex scenes are the ones where Claire's in control and we don't actually get to SEE much of her being in control.)

IDK MAN. honestly, I assume they're gonna cut out a ton of the stuff at Lallybroch, maybe cut out the Geillis/Dougal storyline, and even THEN my mind boggles.

having just finished rereading the first book and pausing there to finish something else, I can't imagine they'll get more than even halfway through it (if that??) in 16 eps, especially since they're moving so slow. idk, idk.

also super here for tips on telling the scottish dudes apart because I CANNOT.

i agree re Geilis, and I think they've also really bumped up both the visibility and the menace from the priest which feels to me like they're really pushing for the "BURN THE WITCHES" bit to be either mid season or maybe even end of season finale, maybe?

Yeah, I keep remembering how much is left and going THAT'S SO MUCH THO! Heh.

And ooh, that is useful, yeah, thank you! The bit about Geilis' actor turning the waistcoat around and stroking it creepily made me lol a lot.

In Voyager he calls it variously 'a stirring', 'a fugitive firmness,' and the best bet for internal dialogue/everyday language, a 'cockstand'.

It's not weird that I know this!!

he definitely calls it a cockstand in the bit in book 1 where they're boning with all the Scots Chorus around after they get ambushed by the whatsits (Grants? I think?)
